During his visit, Lammy will attend high-level meetings with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath.
Lammy will also sign an agreement on the Charter for the Global Campaign on Children’s Care during this visit.
He will subsequently participate in the Global Charter on Children’s Care Reform event to be held at the United Nations office in Colombo.
The Global Charter on Children’s Care Reform calls on world leaders to uphold UN conventions on children’s rights and the rights of persons with disabilities, invest in families, children, and inclusive services, and eliminate violence and harmful practices such as orphanage tourism.
The UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is expected to depart the island on Tuesday evening of the same day after completing his engagements.

BASL condemns fatal shooting of lawyer and wife in Akuregoda

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has strongly condemned the tragic shooting and assassination of an Attorney-at-Law and his wife earlier today in Akuregoda, carried out by a group of unidentified assailants.
In a statement, the BASL noted that while the full circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be investigated, attacks of this nature pose a grave threat to the rule of law and the administration of justice.
The BASL urged the Police to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident, apprehend those responsible, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought before the law without delay.
The BASL further called on law enforcement authorities to take concrete and effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such violent acts in the future, stressing the need to safeguard legal professionals and uphold public confidence in the justice system.
The BASL’s statement dated February 13, 2026 was signed by its President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
Prof. Tissa Vitharana passes away.
Professor Tissa Vitharana earned his MBBS in 1959 and an MD in Clinical Medicine in 1965. He completed postgraduate training in bacteriology and a PhD in virology (1971) in the United Kingdom and later served as Head of Virology and Director of the Medical Research Institute (MRI), Colombo. He also held senior virology posts in the UK and served as Deputy Director of the Victoria Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory in Melbourne from 1991 to 1993. He was appointed Minister of Technology and Research in 2010. Professor Tissa Vitharana died on 13 February 2026, at the age of 91, at his home in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka, following a prolonged illness.
