
Language learning for school children to be made compulsory: PM

Colombo, May 23 (Daily Mirror) – The Government plans to make learning Tamil and Sinhalese students from Grade Six to Nine learn both Tamil and Sinhalese as their respective second languages, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.
“The Sinhalese students from Grade Six to Nine will be made to learn Tamil as their second language while Tamil students will be made to learn Sinhalese as their second language,” the Prime Minister said.
She said the programme will be carried out as a pilot project till teachers are trained to teach languages.
